Calculator - Help

Enter a numerical problem in the input field and press the " = " button. You can enter values by clicking on the individual symbols or by typing directly on your keyboard. You can use either a comma or a dot as a decimal separator (the calculator automatically adapts to your language).

Basic mathematical operations:

Sum (addition): for example 1+1 or 2.3+1.5
Difference (subtraction): for example 2-1 or 1-2 or 2.45-1.05
Product (multiplication): for example 3*4 or 2*5.5
Quotient (division): for example 2/3 or 12.6/2

Percentages

For all calculations with percentages, the calculator can be used as follows:

Calculating a percentage of a base

If you want to calculate n percent of a base Z, calculate as follows: Enter the base Z, press the * button, enter the percentage n, and press the % button.

For example, to calculate 21% VAT from a net price of 4 800, you calculate it like this:

enter 4800
press *
enter 21
press %
and press =

The result is 1008.

Calculating the percentage amount

To calculate what percentage number X is of base Z, enter successively: number X, the ÷ button, the value Z, the % button, and finally press =.

If we want to know what percentage 1008 is of 4 800, enter:

enter 1008
press ÷
enter 4800
press %
and press =

The result is 21 percent.

Increasing the base

If you want to increase base Z by a certain percentage n, the procedure is: enter base Z, press the + button, enter n, press the % button, and finally press =.

For example, to calculate a price with 21% VAT on a base of 4 800:

enter 4800
press +
enter 21
press %
and press =

We get the result 5 808.

Decreasing the base

If you want to decrease base Z by a certain percentage n, the procedure is as follows: enter base Z, press the -, enter n, press % and finally press =.

So if you want to give a 2% discount on a price of 4 800, enter:

number 4800
press -
enter number 2
press %
and press =
The final price after the discount is 4 704.

Other special functions

The buttons for square root (√), square (x²), and sign change (±) work immediately (they modify the currently displayed number). Therefore, it is not necessary to press equals at the end.

For example, if you want to find the square root of 9, simply enter the number 9 and press the √ button right away. The result 3 is displayed immediately.

Copying the result

Clicking on the clipboard icon in the corner of the display copies the currently displayed number to your device's clipboard, so you can paste it into another program. The copied number is without spaces but retains the correct decimal separator (making it perfect for pasting into Excel, for example).

Previous Result Memory (ANS button)

The ANS (Answer) button inserts the exact result from the previously completed operation into the current calculation. For example, if you calculated 10 + 10 = 20 and then start calculating 5 * ..., clicking ANS will insert the number 20 from the previous action (so you get 5 * 20).

Memory Functions (MC, MR, M+, M-)

The calculator memory is used to store and accumulate intermediate results without needing pen and paper. It is especially useful for calculating shopping totals, invoices, or multi-step math problems:

- MC (Memory Clear): Clears the memory (resets to 0).
- MR (Memory Recall): Recalls the stored value from memory onto the display.
- M+ (Memory Add): Adds the currently displayed number to the memory.
- M- (Memory Subtract): Subtracts the currently displayed number from the memory.
When a non-zero value is stored in memory, the M indicator illuminates on the display.

Practical Example (Shopping List Total):
Suppose you are buying: 3 items at $15 each + 2 items at $32 each and have a $10 discount coupon.

1. Press MC (clear the memory for a fresh calculation).
2. Enter 3 * 15 = (result 45) → press M+ (stores 45 in memory, "M" indicator turns on).
3. Enter 2 * 32 = (result 64) → press M+ (adds to memory, running total in memory is 109).
4. Enter 10 → press M- (subtracts the $10 discount).
5. Press MR → the final total of 99 is immediately displayed.

Keyboard Control and Accessibility

The calculator is fully optimized for computer keyboard usage:

- Direct typing: You can type numbers and basic operators (+, -, *, /) directly. Press Enter (or equals) to compute the result.
- Pasting from clipboard (Ctrl+V): You can easily paste a copied number (e.g., from an email) into the calculator using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on Mac). The calculator will automatically remove any spaces. You can even paste entire mathematical equations (e.g., "150 * 3 =").
- Deleting: Use Backspace or Delete to erase the last character. To clear the entire calculation (AC), press the Escape key.
- Tab navigation: If you navigate the site using the Tab key, the focused button will be visually highlighted. To activate the focused button, press the Spacebar (note that the Enter key is always reserved for triggering the " = " computation, even if another button is focused).
